about me
Thank You for Visiting Poyi’s Journalism Portfolio
I was born in Hong Kong in the 1980s when it was still under the British colonial rule.
I grew up there, went to kindergarten, primary school and high schools in this city simply be named “Pearl of the Orient”.
And in 2002, I decided to abandon my university offer – European Studies (French Stream), and headed to Sydney, Australia in early 2003 to pursue my communications studies.
I was granted a place straight to Year 2 of the B.A. Journalism course at University of Technology, Sydney after completing my Communications Dipolma in 2004.
In the following two years, I spent my days mainly in the Bon Marche Building at the UTS city campus; Beaconsfield, Alexandria; and Gosford, Central Coast.
I came back to Hong Kong in early 2007 after the university course concluded at the end of 2006. I was planning to stay in Australia for one more year to do some more travelling and journalism work experience – so i thought getting a Working Holiday Visa should not go wrong.
My life came to a crossroad again when I was lucky enough to be offered a journalist position in a new English daily newspapers in Macau.
Everything seemed to be perfect for me. But I have to admit that I did struggle before I could finally make up my mind – cancelled the Working Holiday Visa and grabbed the chance.
So here I am, in Macau – a former Portuguese colony which only accounts for 1/40 of the total area of Hong Kong, and with no doubt, a true casino city with gaming revenue has already exceeded that of Las Vegas.
With my bilingual skill, I have been allocated to work on three major domains – gaming, tourism and police. But obviously, I also need to touch on many other domains and that’s why you can see more and more different story categories appear on the sidebar from time to time.
My another major task is to do translations! Considering it’s a Cantonese and Portuguese speaking region and press releases are either in one of these two languages, translating documents or transcribing interviews from Cantonese to English is no longer something new in my daily to-do-list.
Apart from the sleep-and-work, work-and-sleep life, I also aim at being a frequent jetsetter and will try to organize some budget travels whenever I can!
I love travelling and enjoy back packing so much. My cool camera tripod is my travel buddy which has witnessed my first single trip to Cairns – my second favourite city in Australia, following my remote home – Sydney!
