Thirty-eight entries including the first three winning photos from the “Year of the Rat 2008” Photo Contest organised by the local Portuguese newspapers Jornal Tribuna de Macau made their first appearance at the Business Tourism Centre yesterday and will stay open to the public until April 25.

A prize giving ceremony was held at the same time in the gallery where champion Mak Heng Kin, runner-up Ng Hoi Kei and second runner-up Ng Weng Na received prize money, an award and a certificate.

Apart from the three winning photos, the 12 honorable prize recipients’ entries and the 23 entries which entered the final round of elimination have been displayed.

It was the second year for Jornal Tribuna de Macau to organise the contest themed on Chinese New Year and in collaboration with the Macau Photography Society, BNU, CTM, Tourism and Clube Militar and the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau.

A judging panel of seven was formed by members from the organisers to select the outstanding works among the more than 300 entries received.

Yesterday’s opening event was attended by chief of the Chief Executive’s Office, Ho Veng On; Portuguese Consul-General in Macau, Pedro Moitinho de Almeida; director of Jornal Tribuna de Macau, Jose Rocha Dinis, and deputy director of the Tourism Board, Maria de Senna Fernandes.

Being the first time to participate in the contest, Mr Mak said the weather during the Chinese New Year was not very good and he was waiting for the sun to show up which could “give his photo of red lanterns and crowds at Senado Square a sense of three-dimension”.

Mr Ng also took home the runner-up award after just the first attempt in the contest.

His entry, showing the dragon dancing performance in front of the A-Ma Temple, was described by him as “dynamic” and “explicitly beautiful postures of humans and the dragon”.

Believing photography was about an “instant feeling”, Mr Ng said his success this time would encourage him to participate in the contest again in the future.
