About 2,000 disabled people and their families are expected to participate in this year’s sports day to be held on Sunday at the Macau Stadium where 12 games have been designed by putting in Olympics elements.

The 2008 Sports Day for Disabled Persons is organised by the Macao Sport Development Board, Macau Special Olympics, Macau Sports Association for Disabled People and the Macau Sports Association for the Deaf.

Apart from celebrating the coming of the Beijing Olympic Games, chairman of the sports association for disabled people Antonio Fernandes said the event was about “family relationship, friendship and social integration”.

Mr Fernandes encouraged the participation of disabled people’s parents, siblings and friends as well as social figures and officials in the competition that did not simply emphasis “people competing against each other”.

Ao Chi San, the vice-chairman of the sports association for the deaf also said that it was grateful to be part of the activity and the games this year had been designed that could allow elderly deaf people to participate.

The event will begin at 2.30 pm at the stadium in Taipa. Interested participants can sign up for the games through one of the organisers.
