An electricity box in a building in Avenida do Infante D. Henrique exploded yesterday morning, which was followed by another small explosion on the wires attached to the back of the block.

An elderly woman who was shocked by the sound was sent to the hospital for care.

According to the Public Security Police, the electricity box was sighted with smoke coming out at about 11am in the No. 34 building.

The Judiciary Police, fire brigade and CEM were also called to the scene and half of Avenida do Infante D. Henrique was temporarily blocked for traffic and pedestrians.

The electricity box exploded afterwards which police said was attributed to the impact caused by an underground gas leakage, instead of mechanical failure as parts inside the box were in “good condition”.

Almost at the same time the plastic pipe that covered wires at the back of the building off Cafe Nata and CTM in Rua do Comandante Mata e Oliveira also exploded.

The explosion left bricks around the plastic pipe damaged from the wall and two scooters which were parked against it got knocked down.

No pedestrians were injured as a result of the incident.

The Judiciary Police said after an initial investigation with the fire services and CEM, it was believed that the second explosion was also caused by a gas leakage from the underground pipeline that created sparks.

Some shops and residents had their electricity temporarily cut yesterday after the incidents.
