Five mainlanders who were trying to smuggle into Macau on a sampan on Tuesday night were intercepted by the Macau Customs off the Sai Van Bridge.

The marine patrol division sighted the sampan without lights on at about 11.30 pm on September 30 off the Gate of Understanding of the Sai Van Bridge, said vice customs inspector, Albano Lopes Monteiro yesterday.

A speed boat was called afterwards to intercept the sampan where three women and two men were found with no passports or other identification documents.

The two men, aged 17 and 16, from Shanxi and Zhuhai, said they received 300 yuan each for riding the sampan and providing assistance during the journey respectively.

After contacting the mainland authorities the five alleged illegal immigrants were taken to the Ilha Verde Customs Station for further interrogation and it was confirmed that they had no legal documents to enter Macau, Mr Monteiro said.

The mainlanders were detained in the Customs headquarters in Barra yesterday and will be sent to the Public Prosecutions Office today.

Mr Monteiro said their intention of coming to Macau was still being investigated.

The three women were aged 17, 20 and 22 and from Hubei Province and Jiangxi Province.
