A 22-year-old man who allegedly smuggled women from the mainland to work as prostitutes in Macau was arrested by the Judiciary Police (PJ) in a hotel in Nape this week.

According to police spokesman Chan Kin Hong, a man complained to the PJ on Sunday afternoon claiming he was threatened by someone at gun point in a hotel room in Nape.

When police arrived at the scene a man and a woman were found, as well as fake passports, a dagger, a toy pistol and a small quantity of illicit drugs were discovered.

Mr Chan said the caller to the PJ might have had an argument with the man found in the hotel room earlier and then came down to the lobby to report to the police. However, the caller could not be contacted afterwards.

Police said they believed that the male suspect, surnamed Zhao, 22, along with other accomplices looked for mainland women who were willing to work as sex workers in Macau and then smuggled them to the SAR and also provided them with rooms to stay.

However, the women would soon be told they needed to repay their “smuggling charges” to Zhao, Mr Chan added.

The 21-year-old woman caught in the hotel room was one of the alleged prostitutes brought from the mainland and she told police all her earnings since she arrived in Macau 10 days ago had been given to Zhao.

However, only one woman was found until now, Mr Chan said.

Zhao was from Jilin Province and his visa to Macau had already expired.

The fake passports seized in the hotel room were prepared for the mainland women to show to police upon being requested to show their identification documents, Mr Chan said.

Zhao was sent to the Public Prosecutions Office and will be charged with organisational crimes, control of prostitutes, drug crimes as well as possession of forbidden weapons.
