Legislative Assembly election set for September 20

A Chief Executive Administration Order gazetted yesterday set the 4th Legislative Assembly election for September 20 this year.

The legislative branch is a 29-member body, comprising 12 directly elected seats, 10 indirectly elected seats which represent functional constituencies, and also seven seats by appointments of the chief executive.

According to the Legislative Assembly Electoral Law, candidate lists and their political platforms must be submitted to the Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau by July 12 at the latest, the 70th day prior to the election date.

Each list of candidates has been approved an election expense limit of 8,942,959.84 patacas has been set for this year.

The chief executive dispatch issued in the Official Gazette appointed the president and four members for the Legislative Assembly Election Committee.

Fong Man Chong, collegiate bench president of the Court of First Instance, will take up the position of election committee chair.

The other committee members will be Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau president Raymond Tam Vai-man; Public Administration and Civil Service Bureau director Jose Chu; Financial Services Bureau director Lau Ioc Ip; and Government Information Bureau deputy director Ho Wai Heng.

Susana Chou, who has been serving as the president of the Legislative Assembly since 1999, has announced to the media last year that she will exit Macau’s political arena after October this year when her term expires.
