A 21-year-old local resident and Year 2 student of the University of Macau will be charged with arson after burning down the scooter of his classmate who he had a dispute with.

The suspect, surnamed Sou, was taken to the crime scene in San Kio by the Judiciary Police (PJ) yesterday for case reconstruction.

According to the PJ spokesman Chau Wai Kuong, the arson was reported in the midnight of May 16 beside the basketball ground in Largo da Cordoaria.

Chau said the suspect found his classmate’s, a female, scooter parked next to the basketball ground in the afternoon of May 16. He then went to buy kerosene, a kind of combustible liquid and then went back to the place at around 3am and set the scooter on fire.

But the 21-year-old first pushed the scooter to in front of the nearby San Kio Neighbourhood Mutual Help Association as Chau said the suspect did not intend to damage the other scooters parked there.

The scooter worth about 10,000 patacas was completely burnt down.

After an investigation, the PJ found that the owner of the scooter had a dispute with one of her classmates regarding study and university assignment.

The PJ apprehended Sou yesterday noon in his home near Averida do Almirante Lacerda. Chau said the suspect later admitted to police that he had committed the crime.

He will be sent to the Public Prosecutions Office today and charged with arson.
